No fewer than four presentations at NAFEMS World Congress 2015 indicate that the “appification of simulation” is poised to revolutionize the way companies use CAE tools. Further, it seems that EASA is becoming an industry standard for this approach.
The “appification” of simulation is a term coined by Kenneth Wong of Desktop Engineering; it refers to the approach of creating straightforward apps, usually browser-based, which are linked to a template simulation model. This enables companies to “democratize” their most valuable simulation models, thus permitting a far greater number of users than the traditional user-group of simulation experts.
Dennis Nagy of BeyondCAE presented a paper entitled Engineering Simulation: The Road(s) Ahead. He discusses CAE user environments, and suggests there is a fork in the road ahead (slide 9) – specifically, the conventional environment for the simulation expert, while becoming easier and more productive in the future, will need to be complimented by the relatively newer approach of domain and problem-specific “vertical” applications and application builder tools. EASA, of course, provides a codeless application builder, along with web-based application libraries and results repositories, to enable our customers to do exactly this, regardless of the type of modeling tools used.
Nagy goes on to forecast a dramatic expansion of useful CAE (slide 10), based on data from Cambashi et al. While there are some 9 million engineers worldwide who could use CAE in some form, less than 1 million do so today. This suggests a truly dramatic opportunity to increase the value derived from CAE by an order of magnitude.
In conclusion, Nagy points to the “Appification” of CAE as a key enabler in this dramatic expansion of CAE usage (slide 11). Note the screenshots on this slide are applications created with EASA (otherwise known as “EASAPs”), created by our good friends at Front End Analytics and Comet Solutions.
Next up, Malcolm Panthaki of Comet Solutions, Zack Eckblad of Intel® Corp, et al. presented SimApps: Simulation for Everyone. The authors noted that Comet’s unique technology enables the creation of CAE template processes, which can then be published over the corporate network as SimApps, using EASA. On slide 6 you will see SimApps such as a Spring Calculator, a Hyraulic Rod Calculator, a Bumper Impact Calculator, and an S-Seal Calculator – all created with EASA.
Walsh showed that that the growth of simulation has stagnated, and the main reason is that access is currently limited to experts (slide 12). He predicts a “revolution”, with 2 of the 5 enablers (slide 15) identified as “Increased emphasis on purpose built applications” and “Emergence of simulation knowledge capture & reuse” – again, this has always been our focus, here at EASA.
Finally, Dr. Ahmed Noor of Old Dominion University presented Potential of Cognitive Computing for Engineering Analysis and Design. Dr. Noor predicts a “radical shift in product creation facilities, engineering software and engineering practice.” He posits the emergence of customized “COGS” – cognitive assistants beyond the current generation of tools such as Siri, Google Now, Microsoft Cortana, and the current technologies for the “appification” of simulations such as EASA.
